(...) hunt the hunter while he hunts is an artist record made on the occasion of the exhibition The Empty Foxhole, the laureates exhibition at HISK curated by Philippe Van Cauteren (SMAK). Van Cauteren asked every artist to make an artist edition especially for the exhibition.
"Lydia’s response to my invitation to create a multiple for the exhibition was to make a vinyl record. That the result would be a vinyl record on which sound, time and space were interrelated was no coincidence. In the middle of her atelier at the HISK, Lydia had built a sound studio, an octagonal space in which, in addition to a table, electronics, a harp and various notations, there were also around 200 small images pinned to the upholstered wall. It would be in this soundlab that Lydia would create the ‘sonic image’ that would later be pressed on the vinyl record (...) hunt the hunter while he hunts. This work can be considered a necessary first experiment in which the artist explores the possibilities of sound, noise, tones and more. This research came as a seamless follow-up to the artist’s video work of recent years. One notices in her video work that she approaches the videographic image with an interest in suggestion, temporality and spatial indeterminacy. The sound sequence on the record ultimately became a soundtrack without imagery, a transformation of image into sound. The fold-out sleeve of the record can be read as the score for the piece’s layered sounds. Musician and composer Eric Schleichim completes the sound matrix woven by the artist with the addition of a number of layers of sound. The result is stunning: intangible but tactile, spherical and dense."
